Oslo as Rhizopolis, cont. A possible model was developed by Rem Koolhaas and his OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture). In an OMA manifesto they look at the city as "a framework capable of absorbing an endless series of further meanings, extensions or intentions, without entailing compromises, redundancies or contradictions". Such a vision is very much in line with the Japanese metabolism and much of the French poststructural theories, i.e. Deleuze's concept of rhizom and Foucault's concept of heterotopia. Instead of looking at the city with centre-periphery spectacles, there should be opportunities to condense, develop and change the metropolitan area in order to continuously create new significance and new energy fields in the old core as well. The best way to tackle the growth of Oslo is to look at the city as a rhizomatic system where the different parts are being constantly renewed. next |
