One of the few remaining signs of the Nazi presence still standing in Vienna are the five enourmous anti-aircraft towers (Flacktürme), scattered through the city. Built to withstand direct bomb hits (and hence impossible to demolish), these bunker-like structures could house up to 30 000 soldiers.

To the Viennese they are monstrosities, ugly reminders of a time best forgotten. Yet these ungainly building have a perverse aestheticism about them, looking like leftovers from the scenography of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis".
